Home Insurance 101

Home Insurance 101

Home ownership is one of the biggest financial investments most people will ever make if not the biggest. That's why it's important to protect your investment with an Ensurco home insurance policy. In the event of a claim, home insurance helps minimize the financial impact on you and your family. To say that it can make a stressful situation easier to deal with is a serious understatement. Unlike car insurance with its legislated wording, home insurance is not legally mandatory. This said, a bank will insist on home insurance as a condition of a loan. Either way however, given that home insurance is not mandatory, policies and coverage wording differs widely from company to company. For this reason, it’s important to deal with a broker that really understands coverage and options.

What does Home Insurance Cover?

Home insurance is generally divided into five different categories. Each part covers a different element of your home but collectively all parts contribute to your coverage limit. They include:
• Dwelling
• Detached Structures
• Home Contents
• Additional Living Expenses
• Legal Liability

Dwelling Coverage is specific to the construction of your home. Covered items include the main building foundation, flooring, doors, and windows. Detached Structures, as the name suggests, is for secondary structures on your property. The most common detached structure is a garages or shed. Home Contents coverage refers to most of your possessions including televisions, clothing, furniture, appliances, and home decor items. It's important to note that there may be limits on high-value items like fine art and jewelry. As such, you may want to itemize these separately and insure them separately by rider. Additional Living Expenses can include items such as hotels, restaurants, and storage. This coverage covers additional expenses you incur as a result of a claim. Finally, Legal Liability in the event that you or a named insured on your policy is sued for damages.  Property damage, bodily injury or otherwise.
It's also important to know what your home insurance policy does NOT cover. Most policies will not cover items like property taxes, mortgage payments or land damage. Some condo insurance policies may cover condo fees but usually not. You may also find that your policy does not cover earthquake or flood damage. When purchasing affordable home insurance, make sure you read your policy in detail.

    What our clients say

Claims service! Most people dread talking to an insurance company or broker to report a claim. But I recently called my insurance broker at Ensurco about a possible water damage claim. He was able to guide me through the process.  The decision was mine as to whether or not I would proceed with the claim.  If so, he explained that he could connect me directly with the insurance company adjuster and resolve the issue. Great advice and great service.  Thanks Ensurco!
